AxleTech is turning heavy-duty vehicles into EVs

2012/8/11      view:

AxleTech is absolutely, positively, but not exclusively, electric.
And, they’ve rebranded themselves.
The 100-year old company – which traces its roots back to the original Rockwell International – has, for most of its history, provided advanced powertrain systems, axles, brakes, components and aftermarket parts for heavy-duty and defense vehicles.
But times they are e-changing, and so is AxleTech.
AxleTech does heavy-duty thinking for heavy-duty vehicles.
More recently, they’ve put their vast engineering and manufacturing know-how into developing electric solutions, and the results have been exceptional. Case in point: Proterra’s Catalyst E2 Max e-bus – the world record-holder for travelling the farthest on a single charge, over 1,100 miles – is powered by an AxleTech electric drivetrain.
The potential certainly exists for AxleTech to put electric drivetrain solutions in other heavy-duty vehicles, too. Industry experts believe that, in a few short years, electric will have infiltrated commercial vehicles of many forms – delivery, garbage hauling, utilities, military, construction, mining, Class 8 trucks, and more.
Why? In bigger commercial vehicles, the investment in electric can pay off quicker, with fuel being such a significant portion of operating costs.
Indeed, the share of electric in the commercial vehicle sector is set to grow four to five times in the next decade.
Which is great for AxleTech, since commercial is their sweet spot.
The Brains Between the Wheels™.
With AxleTech’s renewed and redoubled emphasis on being a technology company, the AxleTech brand needed to be reinvented, too.
We have a long, rich history,” said AxleTech CEO Bill Gryzenia. “But to position us best for success going forward, we needed to replace our 20-year old brand with a brand that will help us now and for the next 20 years.”
“Which we did.”
The new AxleTech brand identity was designed to support AxleTech’s growing influence on drivetrain and axle systems and technologies, their “brains between the wheels,” so to speak. In the new logo, “between the wheels” is symbolized by the circles in the A and H in company’s new logo. The new company colors – green and slate gray – represents the environmentally friendly aspect of electric and the focus on technology and new powertrain solutions.
If number of patents filed is a measure of technological prowess, AxleTech is succeeding. The company filed for more patents in 2017 than it did in the 10 years previous.
